Mindy Scofield
minsco: Who wants to do gift exchange between our children?

I'll do whatever, but I think it's a little silly because, at least Haley, gets presents at 5 different family gatherings, not to mention friends so I'm unconcerned with her getting another gift from a cousin. Plus, someone might have to ship the gift to her which means the kid who picked it out wouldn't even see her open it. Those are my thoughts. What do you guys think?

at 08:54AM 11/10/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I hear ya Julie! I need to see what Caleb thinks too, but that's my train of thought exactly! I don't want Haley expecting so much each year or for her to be ungrateful when the year comes that she doesn't get 30 presents for Christmas. We are so blessed! It's wonderful, but I want her to value family and friends and being together more than how many gifts she gets.

And Julie, if everyone does want to exchange gifts, Haley and Abiyah could just get each other's names and exchange hugs as their gift to one other. : )

Also, Lily doesn't need to be included.

And Caleb is totally gonna say I'm the grinch for even starting this thread! Sorry honey!

at 11:46AM 11/10/08

Andres Turcios
aturcios: we will save this thread and show it to all of our kids when they are older.. LOL...

at 02:35PM 11/10/08

bethany
bethanys: I'm all up for Drew not bringing more toys etc home!!! What if we had the kids think of a little something special (and that doesn't cost anything) to make or give... draw a picture or make a little craft, a hug... imo it's more personal and they're learning about what's most important.. putting work and thought into something special.

at 04:09PM 11/10/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: That's a GREAT idea Beth! I love it! Everyone else in? I think that is a fabulous way for them to give and be creative...I LOVE it!

at 05:10PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Andre just can't stand not to get stuff...

at 05:14PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Maybe we should force our kids to be hobbits and give away their toys on Christmas.

at 05:14PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Or better yet, we could make it like punch a hobo day... anything the to get the darn kids to like the holidays a little less...

at 05:15PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: haha just kidding. I mostly agree... but I couldn't resist.

at 05:16PM 11/10/08

Myriah Grubbs
myriah: I'm no Scofield, but I know a few :) You could have your kids pick out some of there own stuff to give away to needy kids and then have them still exchange a gift, because, lets face it, it's stinkin' fun to get presents. Haha, that's my uninvited two cents :)

at 05:22PM 11/10/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: wow... I know, I started out by writing, "Hey Bill, you already vetoed presents for adults last year, should we take presents away from the kids this year and next year work on taking money away from the homeless?" I had the hobo idea, just didn't have a funny way to add it in there. Thank you Ben.

at 05:26PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: I could write a book on how to work "punching hobos" into various conversations...

at 05:30PM 11/10/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Ha! You would! And it would probably be a #1 best seller too!

at 05:35PM 11/10/08

Nancy
scomom: does this include grandparents????

at 06:08PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: No Mom... you're included the number of groups of people that get her stuff.

at 06:09PM 11/10/08

Nancy
scomom: Oh...I remember Mary Helbig giving me such a hard time in Guate because the boys didn't have a lot of toys.

at 06:12PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @Myriah- oh they get stuff... plenty of it! Abiyah will get things from us, the grandparents, the neighbors, the grandparent's friends, the uncles... No joke: she will even get something from a lady that works at the local gas station! We're just capping how MUCH she gets...

at 06:12PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: I also think that we always give gifts to each other and always expect gifts from Rocky and Nancy. They both do so much for all of us even when we should be taking care of ourselves. Maybe we should think of trying to bless both of them a little more this year!-julie

at 06:15PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: My last comment was again something that everyone needs to think about and see if they should on their own.-julie

at 06:17PM 11/10/08

Nancy
scomom: thanks! I do understand the sentiment, though. I all for instilling meaning in the giving.

at 06:18PM 11/10/08

Myriah Grubbs
myriah: I see... That makes sense. And I realize I'm an outsider, but if you saw how excited Asher and Uriah get about picking out presents for the cousins that they never get to see, you might find it in your hearts to accept just one more gift, hehe.

at 06:21PM 11/10/08

Caleb Scofield
visorclown: Why do all of you hate Jesus?!?! All He wants is for us to spend money on each other and make one another feel special. And all of you want to take that away from Him. This is HIS day! Stop ruining it for Him. Everybody must buy presents for everyone, no exceptions.
Presents are the best way to show someone you care. It is like this tangible thing that you can point to and say, "Hey man, I love you this many dollars worth."
Happy birthday, Jesus — sorry your party's so lame

at 08:08PM 11/10/08

heather
heatherdiane: @caleb if you're serious and that wasn't just a long micheal quote, i kind of agree. i like shopping for xmas and more then alot/expensive gifts i just like having something that someone i love gave me. that way everytime i look at it or use it, it reminds me of them. i'm very sentimental. i still love the necklace that drew made for me.

at 08:21PM 11/10/08

heather
heatherdiane: but i definately wouldn't want my children to have alot of toys. i'll find a way. go julie.

at 08:23PM 11/10/08

Rachel
rachiebee: This has been laugh-out-loud hilarious. Tobi only has one cousin, so i don't relate at all. It's like looking into this whole other realm of existence (*cough* Scoland *cough*)...

at 08:40PM 11/10/08

Myriah Grubbs
myriah: i know this is none of my business really, but it makes me sad that you guys don't even realize how badly bill and charis want to be there and this way would kind of exclude them... then again, maybe they wouldn't care at all, i just know i would.

at 11:34PM 11/10/08

Nichole Miller
nichole: @ heather (I'm post stealing) I'm totally with you, I love shopping for Christmas - it's pretty much my favorite part of the year :). I can't wait until you & Kurt have kids!!! (Though I guess he needs to come home for that to happen ;)).

Count your lucky stars that I am not a Scofield because I would make you all let me give your kids presents and make the gas station man keep his ;). Seriously though... I would ;)

@ Caleb -- LOL!!!!!

at 11:45PM 11/10/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @Myriah... I hear ya. That would be my only conflicting issue... Wanting to have them participate vs needing to put a stop to Abiyah's little trend. Tough situation...

at 12:31AM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @Nicole- it's a gas station girl. If it were a gas station guy he'd get a black eye for Christmas... I'm just sayin'

at 12:31AM 11/11/08

Nancy
scomom: @Myriah...I'm still hoping to find a way. That would be the best Christmas present for me...having everyone here for Christmas.

at 02:21AM 11/11/08

bethany
bethanys: @... well... @ everyone- I think even if Bill and Charis can't make it *sniff* *sob* the boys could still give something they made or thought of... they could send that... a craft, a picture, personalized decorated cookie they made. A hug might not work... but they could even record a song or something and send it per internet. They still get to exchange... I think it's just the work and thought and creativity on the kids part put into the giving that makes it more real and special. In addition to that we could record.. or better, Skype when they open the presents. This is, of course, if Bill and Charis want to. Just an idea.

@Caleb... you're dressing up like baby Jesus for the kids this year, right?

at 06:46AM 11/11/08

Rachel
rachiebee: I think having them make things for each other is the best idea yet. Doesn't encourage materialism, but encourages love and creativity between the cousins. Great idea, Beth!

at 07:23AM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I'm just gonna e-mail you all Scofield parents!

at 08:27AM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: And Turcios'!

at 08:27AM 11/11/08

Rachel
rachiebee: Oh, yeah, sorry for butting in. An e-mail is probably a good idea. :o) Keep us outsiders on the outside!

(but if you want, you can add rachel.byrnes@yahoo.com to that e-mail list, I have some GREAT input for you guys)

LOL, jk

at 10:02AM 11/11/08

bethany
bethanys: Yeah, just in case... for the record no one has thought of excluding the CA Scofield cousins! think we were all talking about all if the cousins all along! :)

at 10:17AM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: That is funny... I'm surprised that they haven't commented yet... oooohhhh Bill.... Charis? Opinions? - Ben

at 10:24AM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Ok so I just want to say that this post will probably make no sense b/c I deleted all my comments. I took things the wrong way, which I do all the time. I just want to say if I have come across the wrong way and a little harsh. I'm truly sorry.
@myriah I need to apologize cause I feel like I got a little defensive and so I'm truly sorry. I know you care about the boys alot. So on that note MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!-julie

at 10:57AM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Rachel, you crack me up! I really don't mind other people commenting, I'm just trying to find out what the Scofield parents want to do this year and since we can't all sit around the living room and talk about it, I thought this would be a good idea, but decided to e-mail each set of parents in addition to BeenUp2 so that I can get things rolling!

And Myriah, Bill and Charis were e-mailed with the rest of the Scofield parents and just haven't chimed in yet. You bring up a good point though that not doing gift exchange could make them feel left out. I hadn't thought of that side of it. I can say with confidence that Haley wouldn't notice the difference which is probably why I'm not as concerned with it. And, when I was a kid, we didn't do anything as far as gifts when it came to my cousins who lived out of state. It never hurt my feelings so I guess I'm just going off of my experience.

at 10:58AM 11/11/08

heather
heatherdiane: @julie i didn't think you're comment was mean, just real and i can understand. i've always been concerned about my future children and their value of a gift. somehow my mother was able to teach us. hopefully i can do that same.

at 11:36AM 11/11/08

heather
heatherdiane: @everyone the scofield threads are the only ones that i read all the way through and they are so entertaining.

at 11:37AM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @heather's last comment - lol

at 11:48AM 11/11/08

Caleb Scofield
visorclown: I still don't hear anyone talking about Jesus' feelings in all this. We're losing sight of the reason for the season people!

at 12:13PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I think Jesus just wants us to all get along!

at 12:27PM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: I think Caleb thinks that Jesus was born for Caleb to get presents.

at 12:50PM 11/11/08

Nichole Miller
nichole: @ Ben, lol. That's good that it's not some random gas station guy -- that'd be weird.

@ Rachiebee - LOL. So can I use that email to send you lots of random forwards???

@ Heather.... so are you saying you never read my threads because I am not a Scofield??? :(

at 01:32PM 11/11/08

Myriah Grubbs
myriah: Hey all, I totally have not intended to be an outside medler in your family affairs. I just know Asher and Uriah love you all very much and have very few opportunities to see you and show you. So, I suppose I was just looking out for my boys :) Anyway, obviously only Bill and Charis can speak for themselves about this, so I'll leave it at that. But I completely understand not wanting kids to be spoiled and ungrateful and having waaaaaay too many toys. But, Bethany's idea is awesome. In fact, you guys should regularly mail each other homemade gift packages. I bet the kids would love it, then they could stay really connected. You guys are all awesome parents and only have your kids' best interest in mind. On that note, good luck with your Christmas family dilemma :)

at 01:37PM 11/11/08

bethany
bethanys: I feel the holiday stress. Let's just all go drink egg nog.... eww... never mind.

@Caleb- Jesus' birthday... Not yours...

at 02:01PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: @Beth, that made me laugh so hard! I know, right? I say let's all go eat some freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and ice cold milk!

@Ben, Didn't Christ become a man just to get a full day each year that Caleb gets gifts? Was it that or to come so that all may have a chance to live? I can never remember.

at 02:06PM 11/11/08

BillandReese
billnreese: I love Scofield threads! Even if there is debate, at least you know that everyone involved has their heads on straight.
@ Everyone...let's do the making gift idea if that's what everyone else wants to do. It's a really good idea. And we forgive you all for hating on us here in CA. -b

at 02:07PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I don't hate you, just where you live!

at 02:17PM 11/11/08

Rachel
rachiebee: @ nichole - yes PLEASE! That's what makes my life feel fulfilled: attention through the sending of forwards from people I don't really know. Priceless. :o)

at 02:24PM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @Bill Until Myriah typed out your guy's names I had forgotten who we were talking about.

at 02:30PM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @Myriah- nothin wrong with stickin' up for my nephews... gotta have someone around to do that. But also do me a favor and whoop up on a few times a month in my absence.

at 02:36PM 11/11/08

bethany
bethanys: Aw Caleb, that's so sweet of you to give up all your Christmas presents for the money to go toward bringing the CA Scofields to St Louis!

at 02:43PM 11/11/08

Nichole Miller
nichole: @ Rachiebee, Awesome, I will get right on it. But I'm confused about the "people I don't really know" part. All this time I thought we were bffs.

at 02:43PM 11/11/08

bethany
bethanys: Caleb, why did you delete your comment???

at 02:44PM 11/11/08

Caleb Scofield
visorclown: @Bscofield- why do you think I'm making this about me getting presents? Have you read any of my comments? I just want Jesus to be happy on His birthday. He should have a wicked awesome party to go to. He is the reason we're celebrating gift giving right? I'm trying to refocus the attention on Him... and giving gifts... to me... particularly a watch.... Stauer.
I'm not so sure about this making gifts idea. I mean, c'mon, How is Haley supposed to know how much her cousins love her if I can't tell her in some concrete dollar form? Lets get this straightened out soon. Its getting cold.

at 02:45PM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Why do you insist on saying @bscofield - my name is Ben. I'm your brother, we saw each other a few days ago. Why do you keep calling me by my screen name? Everyone reading this thread knows who the participants are... If you just say @Ben, they will all get it. Just trying to save you some angry key strokes (your computer will last longer that way).

at 03:18PM 11/11/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: @nicole- you and Rachel aren't BFF's? This thread is crushing many people's illusions... so sad.

at 03:18PM 11/11/08

heather
heatherdiane: i agree with you ben. i find it awkward when i know someones name and i use their screen name. like it's to some unknown internet entity. and they're usually longer

at 03:21PM 11/11/08

Nichole Miller
nichole: @ heatherdiane, I am the same way! lol.

@ Ben, yeah I'm still getting over it. Maybe if someone sends me a handmade Christmas present I will feel much better.... anyone????

at 03:23PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I want to know why everyone writes "@" before the screen name too. It sounds angry like you're cussing at them.

Ben, why do you keep crushing peoples illusions of close nit relationships that don't really exist? So mean spirited of you. ;) I love that term now...mean spirited.

Bethany, did you make that comment up or did Caleb really make that comment and erase it? You are very clever if that was all you. :)

at 04:12PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: wow Nichole, making fun of our handmade gift exchange idea? Harsh.
You are now excluded from the "Scofield sister-in-law's-sisters" gift exchange that we were going to do for the first time this year. And I was knitting hot mitts. bummer.

at 04:15PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Caleb, as always, I got a good little giggle from reading your comment.

at 04:17PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I'm gonna post something else too! This is my thread anyway so I should be able to post 4 things in a row. @ everyone! Take th@!

at 04:18PM 11/11/08

Rachel
rachiebee: @ nichole (glad your name IS your screen name so I don't have to pick sides on that issue) -

We ARE bffs! I was talking about the OTHER people stalking this thread that I "don't really know that well." Duh.

at 04:47PM 11/11/08

Nichole Miller
nichole: @*%@^$# Mindy (haha). Making fun? No. I just want to be included in this post that I have welcomed myself to. Can we make it a "Scofield sister-in-law's-sisters-and-sister-in-laws" exchange? That way Myriah would be included too?

@Rachel - that makes me feel so much better :). I was seriously questioning whether any of my friends were real.

at 05:05PM 11/11/08

Aimee
aimee: I am Heather's sister-in-law as well, and I think you guys are AWESOME! You all are very entertaining! You can feel the love anf family togetherness! ;)
Can I be included in the "sister-in-laws sister- in -laws exchange" too? ;)

at 05:12PM 11/11/08

heather
heatherdiane: word. spread the love. the sisters-in-law sisters are all awesome

at 05:15PM 11/11/08

Nancy
scomom: to all the @'s...this is the best thread ever! I have laughed so hard I don't even feel my toothache anymore!

at 06:59PM 11/11/08

Caleb Scofield
visorclown: @Bscofield- why are you acting like I don't really call you Bscofield in real life?

@Bethany- I would gladly give up my presents and much more to get the cali's out here.

at 07:27PM 11/11/08

Kurt Scofield
and1210: im down for giving our gift money to bring bill, charis and the boys

at 07:28PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Fact: Caleb often refers to you as "Bscofield." He was just telling me today, "I might go hunting with Bscofield this weekend." And on Sunday, "Didn't Bscofield do such a good job teaching at WVCC?" And also, "we should have dinner with Julie and Bscofield sometime soon."

at 07:30PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: BILL, I DO NOT WRITE HATE COMMENTS!! I FREAKING LOVE YOU ALL!! SO SHUT UP ABOUT IT!

at 07:31PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Let me guess, you thought THAT was hateful too, huh?

at 07:32PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: there is no pleasing you Bill.

at 07:33PM 11/11/08

BillandReese
billnreese: Mindy...sorry to expose your barrenness that way...fortunately for you, you married into a very emotionally healthy family that is full of forgiveness for such foolishness - b

at 07:35PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Curses and swears!

at 07:36PM 11/11/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: You would go using fancy big words.

at 07:44PM 11/11/08

bethany
bethanys: @ Min- I'm clever, plus it's fun to poke at visorclown...

What does "visorclown" mean?

at 09:46PM 11/11/08

heather
heatherdiane: @bethany i can't even begin to imagine

at 12:20AM 11/12/08

Andres Turcios
aturcios: Hilarious! quite possibly the best thread ever.. so.. what did you guys decide? can we all make crafts for each other? not just the kids! what about us??? even Bill can make a craft right? or is he gonna veto that too?

at 05:32AM 11/12/08

Rachel
rachiebee: @ bethany/heather - I have wondered that myself. I assumed it meant he really liked visors and is kind of a clown. Good guess?

at 05:42AM 11/12/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: I've been with the man for 8 years and I don't know what visorclown means. We both hate clowns and visors so...I don't get it.

Caleb, explain yourself!

Andre, I haven't heard from you guys or Ben & Julie, but the rest of us are in for exchanging home made gifts. And no, adults are not included. But if you want to make me a picture, that would be just great.

at 06:34AM 11/12/08

John and Bizzy
grappers: Uugh. I said 'Hanukkah' this year and John practically dropped into the fetal position and cried. Family - yes. But I wanna slit the throat of covetousness. @!
And Mind, I'm sure it was an oversight on your part to not mention us, but I think crafts are great for the kids. But if I'm gonna be a part of Christmas this year I'll have to insist on Kitchen Aide mixers for all the girls. I'd like red, please.

at 09:01AM 11/12/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry Grapps! What's wrong with me? I mean, "Scofield" "Grappherhaus" ...even sounds the same! How could I leave you out? Please forgive my barrenness as Bill so graciously did. And I will put you down for a red Kitchen Aide Mixer, no prob. We just won't eat for the entire month of December to make up for that purchase! Haley will understand.

at 09:18AM 11/12/08

Rachel
rachiebee: yes, but as a thank-you, I'm sure Bizzy would be more than happy to invite you over to enjoy some cookies she used the mixer to create! So it's not a total loss. And think how good those cookies will taste if you haven't eaten in a month??

at 09:24AM 11/12/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: True, true.

at 09:28AM 11/12/08

bethany
bethanys: So, I have another idea. I think that Beenup2 should have a contest for the most hilarious thread ever. I do believe the gay chubby dating one, this one, hm.. I know there're others I just can't remember at the moment. And the person that wins would get, what else??? A homemade craft... or a hug... or a cookie.

at 10:06AM 11/12/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Ha ha! A cookie!! For sure, a cookie! And the Scoland thread was pretty funny if you ask me. How did so many funny people end up in the same family? (And faux family...<cough> <cough> Bizzy and Rachel!)

at 12:08PM 11/12/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Once upon a time we all made "players" to play in NBA Jam - best game ever. Andrew's was some horridly large ape named Bubba- hence the name. If I remember correctly caleb's was a clown. Then he got a visor, as in a handheld computer (HP Visor?) and became visorclown... how come people cant keep up with this?

Is that right caleb? Wasn't it an NBA Jam character? And that's where you got clownaround email addresses... Or did I just make that all up? hmm... equally possible.

at 03:21PM 11/12/08

bethany
bethanys: Bubba confirms this to be so. I remember sitting around your house as a neglected girlfriend while you all played NBA Jam for sure.

Oh, there should also be awards for the longest thread ever... most misunderstood, etc...

at 04:29PM 11/12/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: We won't win the longest thread ever... not even close.

at 05:00PM 11/12/08

Andres Turcios
aturcios: Ben is 100% correct.. "on FIRE" perhaps! lol.. the Ape was hilarious! I havent talked about this with Jess because im in VA but we are in for the craft.. who will perform the name drawing?

at 06:01PM 11/12/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Wow...Ben, bravo! I remember that NBA Jam game, remembered that's where Bubba came from and the name visorclown, but didn't make the visor connection. I'm impressed. Good thing it was one of his brothers who trumped his own wife's knowledge of his nicknames.

at 06:46PM 11/12/08

Caleb Scofield
visorclown: We did get our names from NBA jam. But, Bubba wasn't just any horridly large ape. He was about 6'10" 225 strong as a bull and had a very fashionable viking hat.

I was a clown in that game, and any other that let you pick your own HEAD... just that game. They allowed nicknames and the game would remember the nickname you picked, i.e. bubba. There was no "clown" nickname, so, obviously I was "joker". I was a clown nonetheless. I did have a "handspring visor" which was a handheld PDA. The most amazing thing of its kind, at the time. I was known for the clown on the game and I really liked that visor, so some how the stars aligned and the name just came to me. And 134 usernames later, it's still the one I run to.

at 07:12PM 11/12/08

BillandReese
billnreese: fascinating....someday, when we have more time, I'll share some of the story behind "wscofield"

at 08:46PM 11/12/08

Ben Scofield
bscofield: fascinating i'm sure...

at 08:50PM 11/12/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: @wscofield- I can't stand the wait, do tell!
@Bscofield- Am I right?

at 04:29AM 11/13/08

Mindy Scofield
minsco: That was Caleb, just so you know Bill...I wasn't hatin!

at 06:41AM 11/13/08

Ben Scofield

Caleb Scofield
visorclown: why do you think that? She doesn't listen to him. Was there a mindy calling in?

Mindy Scofield
minsco: Ben, No, I didn't, but I think he's a great actor.

Ben Scofield
bscofield: A "Mindy" called in and it sounded enough like her to make me wonder (distorted through a phone and again through a radio)... She called in for the Killer Vintage segment. A guy who is in expert in vintage guitars comes in and people call and say I have XXX guitar- how much is it worth. Well "mindy" called in and had a $16k guitar! It was a 59 Martin, I think.

Ben Scofield
bscofield: Let me add that I didn't think Caleb and Mindy have a vintage guitar sitting around, but the caller said it was a family members...
