Who wants to do gift exchange between our children?
I'll do whatever, but I think it's a little silly because, at least Haley, gets presents at 5 different family gatherings, not to mention friends so I'm unconcerned with her getting another gift from a cousin. Plus, someone might have to ship the gift to her which means the kid who picked it out wouldn't even see her open it. Those are my thoughts. What do you guys think?
at 08:54AM 11/10/08

minsco:
I hear ya Julie! I need to see what Caleb thinks too, but that's my train of thought exactly! I don't want Haley expecting so much each year or for her to be ungrateful when the year comes that she doesn't get 30 presents for Christmas. We are so blessed! It's wonderful, but I want her to value family and friends and being together more than how many gifts she gets.
And Julie, if everyone does want to exchange gifts, Haley and Abiyah could just get each other's names and exchange hugs as their gift to one other. : )
Also, Lily doesn't need to be included.
And Caleb is totally gonna say I'm the grinch for even starting this thread! Sorry honey!

I'm all up for Drew not bringing more toys etc home!!! What if we had the kids think of a little something special (and that doesn't cost anything) to make or give... draw a picture or make a little craft, a hug... imo it's more personal and they're learning about what's most important.. putting work and thought into something special.

That's a GREAT idea Beth! I love it! Everyone else in? I think that is a fabulous way for them to give and be creative...I LOVE it!

Maybe we should force our kids to be hobbits and give away their toys on Christmas.
at 05:14PM 11/10/08

Or better yet, we could make it like punch a hobo day... anything the to get the darn kids to like the holidays a little less...
at 05:15PM 11/10/08
bscofield:
haha just kidding. I mostly agree... but I couldn't resist.
at 05:16PM 11/10/08
myriah:
I'm no Scofield, but I know a few :) You could have your kids pick out some of there own stuff to give away to needy kids and then have them still exchange a gift, because, lets face it, it's stinkin' fun to get presents. Haha, that's my uninvited two cents :)
at 05:22PM 11/10/08
minsco:
wow... I know, I started out by writing, "Hey Bill, you already vetoed presents for adults last year, should we take presents away from the kids this year and next year work on taking money away from the homeless?" I had the hobo idea, just didn't have a funny way to add it in there. Thank you Ben.

at 06:12PM 11/10/08

I also think that we always give gifts to each other and always expect gifts from Rocky and Nancy. They both do so much for all of us even when we should be taking care of ourselves. Maybe we should think of trying to bless both of them a little more this year!-julie

I see... That makes sense. And I realize I'm an outsider, but if you saw how excited Asher and Uriah get about picking out presents for the cousins that they never get to see, you might find it in your hearts to accept just one more gift, hehe.

Why do all of you hate Jesus?!?! All He wants is for us to spend money on each other and make one another feel special. And all of you want to take that away from Him. This is HIS day! Stop ruining it for Him. Everybody must buy presents for everyone, no exceptions.
Presents are the best way to show someone you care. It is like this tangible thing that you can point to and say, "Hey man, I love you this many dollars worth."
Happy birthday, Jesus — sorry your party's so lame

@caleb if you're serious and that wasn't just a long micheal quote, i kind of agree. i like shopping for xmas and more then alot/expensive gifts i just like having something that someone i love gave me. that way everytime i look at it or use it, it reminds me of them. i'm very sentimental. i still love the necklace that drew made for me.

@ heather (I'm post stealing) I'm totally with you, I love shopping for Christmas - it's pretty much my favorite part of the year :). I can't wait until you & Kurt have kids!!! (Though I guess he needs to come home for that to happen ;)).
Count your lucky stars that I am not a Scofield because I would make you all let me give your kids presents and make the gas station man keep his ;). Seriously though... I would ;)
@ Caleb -- LOL!!!!!

@... well... @ everyone- I think even if Bill and Charis can't make it *sniff* *sob* the boys could still give something they made or thought of... they could send that... a craft, a picture, personalized decorated cookie they made. A hug might not work... but they could even record a song or something and send it per internet. They still get to exchange... I think it's just the work and thought and creativity on the kids part put into the giving that makes it more real and special. In addition to that we could record.. or better, Skype when they open the presents. This is, of course, if Bill and Charis want to. Just an idea.
@Caleb... you're dressing up like baby Jesus for the kids this year, right?
at 06:46AM 11/11/08

@myriah I need to apologize cause I feel like I got a little defensive and so I'm truly sorry. I know you care about the boys alot. So on that note MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!-julie
at 10:57AM 11/11/08

minsco:
Rachel, you crack me up! I really don't mind other people commenting, I'm just trying to find out what the Scofield parents want to do this year and since we can't all sit around the living room and talk about it, I thought this would be a good idea, but decided to e-mail each set of parents in addition to BeenUp2 so that I can get things rolling!
And Myriah, Bill and Charis were e-mailed with the rest of the Scofield parents and just haven't chimed in yet. You bring up a good point though that not doing gift exchange could make them feel left out. I hadn't thought of that side of it. I can say with confidence that Haley wouldn't notice the difference which is probably why I'm not as concerned with it. And, when I was a kid, we didn't do anything as far as gifts when it came to my cousins who lived out of state. It never hurt my feelings so I guess I'm just going off of my experience.
at 10:58AM 11/11/08

@julie i didn't think you're comment was mean, just real and i can understand. i've always been concerned about my future children and their value of a gift. somehow my mother was able to teach us. hopefully i can do that same.

myriah:
Hey all, I totally have not intended to be an outside medler in your family affairs. I just know Asher and Uriah love you all very much and have very few opportunities to see you and show you. So, I suppose I was just looking out for my boys :) Anyway, obviously only Bill and Charis can speak for themselves about this, so I'll leave it at that. But I completely understand not wanting kids to be spoiled and ungrateful and having waaaaaay too many toys. But, Bethany's idea is awesome. In fact, you guys should regularly mail each other homemade gift packages. I bet the kids would love it, then they could stay really connected. You guys are all awesome parents and only have your kids' best interest in mind. On that note, good luck with your Christmas family dilemma :)

He should have a wicked awesome party to go to. He is the reason we're celebrating gift giving right? I'm trying to refocus the attention on Him... and giving gifts... to me... particularly a watch.... Stauer.
I'm not so sure about this making gifts idea. I mean, c'mon, How is Haley supposed to know how much her cousins love her if I can't tell her in some concrete dollar form? Lets get this straightened out soon. Its getting cold.

bscofield:
Once upon a time we all made "players" to play in NBA Jam - best game ever. Andrew's was some horridly large ape named Bubba- hence the name. If I remember correctly caleb's was a clown. Then he got a visor, as in a handheld computer (HP Visor?) and became visorclown... how come people cant keep up with this?
Is that right caleb? Wasn't it an NBA Jam character? And that's where you got clownaround email addresses... Or did I just make that all up? hmm... equally possible.
at 03:21PM 11/12/08
bethanys:
Bubba confirms this to be so. I remember sitting around your house as a neglected girlfriend while you all played NBA Jam for sure.
Oh, there should also be awards for the longest thread ever... most misunderstood, etc...

Ben is 100% correct.. "on FIRE" perhaps! lol.. the Ape was hilarious! I havent talked about this with Jess because im in VA but we are in for the craft.. who will perform the name drawing?
at 06:01PM 11/12/08
minsco:
Wow...Ben, bravo! I remember that NBA Jam game, remembered that's where Bubba came from and the name visorclown, but didn't make the visor connection. I'm impressed. Good thing it was one of his brothers who trumped his own wife's knowledge of his nicknames.
at 06:46PM 11/12/08

visorclown:
We did get our names from NBA jam. But, Bubba wasn't just any horridly large ape. He was about 6'10" 225 strong as a bull and had a very fashionable viking hat.
I was a clown in that game, and any other that let you pick your own HEAD... just that game. They allowed nicknames and the game would remember the nickname you picked, i.e. bubba. There was no "clown" nickname, so, obviously I was "joker". I was a clown nonetheless. I did have a "handspring visor" which was a handheld PDA. The most amazing thing of its kind, at the time. I was known for the clown on the game and I really liked that visor, so some how the stars aligned and the name just came to me. And 134 usernames later, it's still the one I run to.
