Photoshop? No. I'd look a lot better if photoshopped. Nathan could make me look a whole lot better!!
The gun is a semi-custom Nosler 284 Ackley - only 500 made. I have #001. What a GREAT gun.

Now I'm a city boy. Ive lived in the country before but not the hills. And I know we've gone through this before. But please, do tell for all us city boys(or maybe just me) why this is so fun?

willmathhews: The pleasure is in being outdoors with wildlife, taking responsibility for nature and it's animals, experiencing conquest, providing meat for my family instead of hiring an assassin (the slaughterhouse) to do the killing for me. Things die for us to live. The further away we become from the food chain as a society, the more likely we are going to make foolish decisions on life, nature, and what is ideal. Not everyone has to hunt. Some simply don't enjoy it - no problem. But to live in ignorance of the food chain allows for an idealism only works in movies where you have complete control of the environment. And yes, even vegetarians kill to stay alive.

GOOD WORD! I knew there was a good reason why I love to hunt. It's not a popular subject here in Olympia. As always, Pastor Bill articulates it all so well.
papabear:
@brevived: You forgot about the feeling of pulling the trigger with the target in sight, the kick of the rifle, the smell of the gunpowder, the noise of the bullet as it leaves the barrel and the brief but beautiful muzzle flash - darn near incorporates all five senses! We need to go out shooting again like we used to - my arsenal has grown a lilltle bit since then! :)

Interesting. I hate boiling things down to color or cultural norms. But most black people don't hunt. In fact I grew up believing that hunting for fun was inhumane and not what well informed educated people do. I've always associated hunting to uneducated hill billy white folk. I guess I'm in need of some deprogramming. I'm open to tring this. Maybe Jason can take me when I move to Redding. I've never shot a gun before though. I used to be one of those anti gun freaks and strongly against all forms of capital punishment.

I was president of anti gun club in high school if that helps you gave where I'm at in all this. :-)

willmatthews: Your honesty and openness is refreshing. Thanks. Every area of life has those who abuse privileges and responsibilities. Hunting has it's share. But it really is an intrinsic right of those who live on this planet. However, this privilege also has the responsibility of ethical management of land and animal populations. True hunters do so, more than any other single part of the population. Please forgive the slobs.:-)
thompson:
Bill: you should run for president. That was a great answer. Not only that, but you may have just converted an anti-gun, anti-hunting activist. lol. Youre my hero! I'm going to take Orren hunting Wed. and Thurs. morning for his first deer. We will share the pics.

I wish they would let us hunt here in Lake California. The deer come right up the our back door, sometimes onto our porch. This is from people being... not very responsible and feeding the deer. They have no fear of man. But, there's this whole concern about shooting someone's house, car, or something of that nature. Apparently it's a safety issue. lol :D

Nice rifle, Bill. I'm doing some serious rejoicing with you over here (to stop my jealously)! What Caliber is it?
Also, nice explanation of hunting! I can think of several people who would need to hear it that way...if they were actually interested in a discussion rather than an arguement...

Niiiiiiiiiice buck. On our exit leaving Hayfork, after 15+ years, Greg and I finally got our buck. He was in rut with about three or four does. Killed him in one clean hit. He never knew what hit him. Had to be at least a six point (one side) and huge!' The guy behind us quickly turned around and threw him in the back of his 4 wheel drive truck as we were checking the radiator of our 05 Ford Focus. Ahhhhh, Trinity County and I do love venison too!

What a great picture this is Poppa Bill--You make hunting look so fun! i have no idea why!! I would probably cry still =-) I've learned a lot through your comments on Been up 2 and through your sermons and I am eternally thankful--my opinion on hunting has changed simply because I've been INFORMED with Knowledge from a HUNTER that I respect and honor. My favorite part that I'd like to read more of your thoughts on is::::: "The further away we become from the food chain as a society, the more likely we are going to make foolish decisions on life, nature, and what is ideal."-------can you give more examples?? i love this!

Inga, I don not hunt. Ive grown up around hunter through and love it. I get a kick watching the guys kill something. They become little boys all over again. Its very entertaining. I love it. But, I really love to get that meat in my freezer.
Will, when you come we will have to have you try some really good meat.

ingamae, i would rec some enzymes if you are just trying some meat after a while of not having any...

@rogueworrior: Thanks for that suggestion. I used to take those when my old acupuncturist prescribed them to me from her health store!! Pre Jesus days...I loveeedd getting acupuncture. It always felt sooo good. I wonder if it would be ok to go see one again. Does anyone have any thoughts? Would i just plead the blood over myself or just see what i feel in the spirit when i go in? I am learning that it is all about the heart anyway but I want to be safe....

.284 Ackley, nice. Who made it? You could probably take a deer from a thousand yards with that thing if you could get it to stand still long enough.

I dream of having a rifle like that someday. My grandpa's .30-06 will get the job done for now though. I just need to find a place in Northern California that is worth hunting.
When I was pregnant 15 years ago, if it had not been for the boys around me who did hunt, I would have literally starved. I wasn't working and my husband was only making $7.00 an hour. They kept me in deer meat and we canned out of the garden.
So for me, the right to hunt is not a sport thing. There really are still people in this country who rely on what they kill to eat. I have known many over the years who did so.

xencounters: exactly. While I can afford to buy meet, I hunt to eat. I also enjoy the hunt. But the meat is a REALLY important part of the process.
