I need apple advice Stat! Where's a genius when u need one on Christmas day

bina:
try holding down the power key till it powers down and then wait a bit and try rebooting it. if it can't find the hard drive after that, u'll need the system disks to try to run a diagnostic on it.
ingamae:
My sister is very mad at me please pray thanks everyone!

@bina-how do I put the systems disk in?? It won't open the disc drive? @nathangrubbs-help.....u out there?

Ingrid, try holding in the power switch like Sabina said then when it starts to come on again keep pressing the disc drive button till it opens. After that might have to restart it again with the disc in. This is not Apple advice, just general advice since I'm not really familiar with Macs.

bina:
yeah try what joe said -- as i recall on my old mac desktop, if i held the disk open key down while it was booting up it would open the drive so i could put the disk in. once the disk is in u might have to shut down and restart and just so ur sister knows -- this might NOT have been anything u did. sometimes hard drives just die.
nsampson:
Once your able to boot to the system disc, you should have the option to launch the Disc Utility tool. In there you can run diagnostics on the hard drive. If the diags fail or can't run because your hard drive can't be seen ( which you should be able to tell if the hard drive is present just buy loading the disc utility and looking to see if the hard drive appears as an available volume) then your probably looking at one of two thing: 1. You hard drive died and will need to be replaced. 2. From working with pc's or macs, the hard drive cable or power cable can come loose and may need to just be reseated in its place, which is a better option than replacing the drive.

nathan:
ingrid, does any of this make sense to you?
ingamae:
Thanks Wes! I was wrong about the disc thing not being able to be ejected I guess you can slide the disc in and out so we need the utility disc. Thanks everyone for all your help.

God is gonna have to come through for me and so I say God I have faith for substance of a hard drive to be fixed by an angel and the evidence to manifest now in Jesus name!!!!!!

I leave my mac on all the time Ingamae I don't think that's the problem.
at 01:15PM 12/25/08
bina:
i doubt that leaving it on for four days would do anything to it -- unless its sitting somewhere near a heater and got overheated -- but even then. the issue with the hard drive might be a bad hard drive -- they do happen -- its rare in macs but it does happen. honestly -- i doubt that anything u did to it caused this. and i'll pray that papa god brings u and ur sister peace about this...

ericj:
did you understand all this above? Macs are meant to be left on.......
nsampson:
It's true, one of the nice things about owning a mac is that they are engineered to be left on for weeks at a time. This might not make you feel any better, but hard drives are just like any other piece of electronic hardware. They have seriously fast moving parts inside them, are suseptable to heat, and are dependent on electrical power.......basically they can die, malfunction, or just plain quit at virtually any time. Praying things will work for you.

ingamae:
Thanks Nsampson that means a lot---I am honored you would pray for me and the mac!!!

bina:
but do u understand what nsampson is saying ingrid -- it means that the hard drive could die through NO FAULT of ur's. does she have apple care on it -- if she does, its a no brainer -- just take it to an authorized apple repairman and they can diagnose and fix the problem on apple's dollar -- not ur's. i had a really old desktop (a performa -- probably the only MAC that was a lemon) -- at any rate, it kept dying -- it was the hard drive and the mother board and the power supply and well, u get the picture and we had it for three years and every time it was in the shop (which was more than it was on the desk) it was covered because we had apple care. and finally, i faxed all my repair records to them and they sent me a new computer. so look -- before u go spending money on ur sister for no good reason -- it should be diagnosed and if its a defective hard drive (which it could be) or the connection has unseated itself so that it isn't recognizing the hard drive) which it could be -- all no fault of ur's -- then apple should fix it for free if she's only had it a year...

ingamae:
Ok Bina! I will keep you updated on this. Part of the issue is that she bought it from someone else for 800.00 and they only had it 6 months so i am not sure....but God will make it all great! i know it.
at 06:47PM 12/25/08
bina:
well then we have to ask ourselves y they sold it after only 6 months i will pray for u all because this should never ever come between u as siblings ... ur family and that means more than a computer....
