Alex is having a little trouble in math and, honestly, I don't like how they're teaching it at his school. I like Saxon's repetition and how they build on concepts. It just seems to make it stick in the brain better. I used Saxon when I homeschooled Mark for 4th and 5th grades. The budget cuts have put our schools in Hawaii on furlough days, so their school days have been cut to 4 days a week plus some longer breaks. So I'm going back to the kindergarten book and doing review with Alex. I plan to get the 1st grade book after we finish this one.

I used saxon at my school forever! We have a new program now. It's interesting how they teach different concepts!

Math is harder for Ethan too...there is this website- time4learning.com that helps kids with all subjects, but appeals to audio/visual type learners..I'm thinking of trying that with Ethan. Let me know your progress!

@kristin - did you use the saxon for kindergarten? you'd know it pretty well then! we did it today and Alex loooooved it! I think he just likes the fact that we're doing school at home and I'm his teacher. He wanted to keep going when our lesson was done!
@beth - I'll have to check that out! I think math is one of those subjects that is best learned when it's taught according to their learning style. okay, that was a lame sentence, but you get what I mean.

Amy, I ordered it from someone on ebay, it was much cheaper than amazon or any other place I saw it, by about $20 or more.

Yes, I've used Saxon for kindergarten for about 9 years. I felt like I supplemented a lot with it toward the end of the year, though. It does spiral nicely.
