another tip. If your popcorn doesn't pop well, it might be too dry. Leave it in the fridge for a few days and try again...

I have a stove top popper too! One of the loves of my life. It caught on fire last week which scared me to death, but it's still functioning. Making it in a pot is good too. Cover the bottom with a thin layer of oil, then the kernels. Once you hear them popping shake, shake, shake. Make sure you have a lid on the top of the pot too!

another trick for the regular pot: heat oil with one or two kernels, when the kernels pop, pour in the rest of the popcorn and stir until they start to pop.

Sara - that's what Google said...plus take it off the heat for 30 sec before putting the pan back on. it worked really well!

I put iol in the bottom put seeds in and set the heat on medium low heat and let it set it will pop perfectly. Don't wash your pan either than it will season it and the popcorn tastes better and better every time.
