Ok so last night one of my worst fears came to pass. I have in the past been awakened to the sound of kids crying outside. You can't imagine how scary it is, to think your children are for some reason outside, and crying in the middle of the night. My first thought is always that they were sleep walking, my boys sleep very hard. But, when I would get up to investigate, they would always be inside safe and sound. So I can't explain what I was hearing, must've been a dream.
Last night however, Jon and I were watching a movie and it was about 11:30. All of a sudden, Caleb (my 8 yr. old) comes out, looks right at us, unlocks the front door and walks out! He was totally sleep walking. Jon went out to follow him and he was just walking off with no idea what he was doing.
Needless to say we are headed to home depot today to put chain locks on the doors, or deadbolts. I still can't believe that actually happened, or what could have been if Jon and I had been sleeping.
Do any of you have sleep-walkers and solutions that have worked for you????

@ Leah and Nicole- I think they are called eye hooks- that is what we have on all our doors

What prevents the sleep walker from disabling those things?

lilmama:
Wes I was thinking the same thing. If I go with the eye hook (I think that is on top of the door) he can't reach that. Also I am thinking of installing something without telling him so he doesn't know why the door won't open.

Yikes! My family is full of sleepwalkers, but none of us ever went outside, that I know of. My brother did pee in the refrigerator, though, thinking he had opened the door to the bathroom.

wes:
Do sleep walkers not figure stuff out in their sleep? Even if you didn't tell him you installed something, would he not notice it anyway? Personally, I notice stuff like that.

leahmariv:
No it's not a eye hook... And it's up on top of the door I don't think there is a way for him to unlock it while sleeping... I will post a picture

lilmama:
Oh, thankfully we have no peeing going on in the fridge!!! @ Wes, I think they do to a certain extent, but Caleb is only 8 so I don't think he would notice if we put something up on top of the door. I guess my next option would be deadbolts, because no matter how observant he was he would not be able to open them without a key.

Yeah Krisann I peed on the front porch once. My dad made me spray it off the next morning. I didn't remember what I'd done until about half way through the chore.

I have those pool alarms on all my doors. Just sticky things so no wall/door holes. turn them on at night and an alarm goes off if the door opens. I got a pgk from Costco a while ago. Not expensive either. I may even have one or two that I neer used if you want them!
krisann:
haha Ian, amazing that you could remember. We had to be really careful with my brother, if we tried to wake him up so he would realize what was going on and go back to bed, he would become confused and scared, and sometimes cry, but he NEVER remembered anything the next day.
