Day 1 - June 21, 2006
From Sacramento to Chicago
We left this morning to leave for RailsConf 2006 from Sacramento airport and we had a layover in San Francisco before we flew into O'Hare in Chicago (aka chi-town).

We boarded our flight from San Francisco to Chicago. I sat next to two guys and none of us said a word to each other the whole flight. The guy next to me had definitely not showered in a while so that made it all the more enjoyable.

With our luggage unscathed by the TSA and associates we high tailed it out of O'Hare so that we could try and get into the city to have some dinner. We had arrived about 90 minutes late so we knew we were cutting it close. We jumped into a cab and had him take us to our hotel. Unfortunately he did not know where it was so we had to guess for him. It is not like he does this for a living .. besides, how many people actually stay at an Embassy Suites that is 2 miles from the airport? We offloaded our luggage into our rooms and went down to the front desk where we inquired about the best way to get downtown and if restaurants were still open. The girl at the front desk told us everything was open really late and all we had to do was walk down to the train station and take it downtown -- it was so simple!

We walked to the Rosemont train station where we found a bizarre man whose favorite thing to do was to violently shake a small Pepsi bottle full of who knows what. He circled his prey (us) as he shook this bottle -- we countered this move by slowly rotating our stances to protect our backs. He boarded the train with us.

When we got on the train we slowly started to take in the system of different lines and transfer points. We knew that the part of the train system that loops through downtown Chicago is appropriately called "The Loop". We decided to get off at an arbitrary station called Washington. Thinking back we started wondering why the lady at the front desk had given us such ambiguous directions. We crossed the tunnel at Washington to go to the Red Line and we were definitely out of place. We tried to ask a CTA employee if there were restaurants above and she seemed to play dumb. She told us our best bet was to take a bus to somewhere else. As it was already past midnight we decided to not risk getting lost downtown and got back on the Blue Line heading back to Rosemont.

By the time we got back to Rosemont it was nearly 1am in the morning and all of the restaurants in walking distance were closed. We had pizza delivered to my room and had our first taste of Chicago ..
