| As usual there was plenty of traffic going from Sacramento to San Francisco. I met up with Kevin at the airport and we boarded our flight to Seoul, Korea. As we flew over Seoul I felt like there was a parallel with the bland beef and the city itself. From the plane the snow covered city looked very bland and had a hazy, saturated-with-smog feel to it. After de-boarding the post-apocalyptic feelings grew even stronger. Watch towers topped mountains and armed guards were a reminder that I was no longer sitting in the middle of my western pop culture world. The inside of the Kimpo airport provided no relief from the depressing atmosphere. The carpet was extremely gross and the walls were dirty and bare. The glass windows provided a view of the setting sun across a hazy burnt orange landscape. The people in the airport seemed to be pretty advanced .. nearly everyone had Samsung phones that seem light-years ahead of my Nokia 5150. Flying to Seoul, Korea was pretty uneventful. There were relatively few passengers on the large Airbus. Our movie selection was pretty good .. I watched both Meet The Parents and Pay It Forward. The Airbus had an SNES system that was built into the headrests on which I played Tetris Attack. Having the SNES really helped make the long trip bearable. The on flight meal was Korean Beef which I had a hard time with. It was bland and was basically marinated in onions. On the side was a large crouton that was also soaked in onion juices which made it really soggy. I tried to be a sport and eat it anyways but it literally made me gag (I hate onions) and eventually gave up after 5 bites. |
