| I slept most of the trip from Seoul to Singapore. When we deboarded the plane the humidity was like a wall and it was only 1am! The airport here was very nice in comparison to Seoul. I guess I wasn't expecting much seeing as I had no knowledge of what Singapore was like. Flat screen plasma televisions were all over the place and everything seemed like it was brand new. In the center of market area was a pond area filled with koi. Next to it was a raffle for a BMW Z3! Yeah - Internet access in Singapore! Best of all it was free as long as your device supported infrared. Kevin suggested that it seemed fast enough to be about 1mbit/s. There were several other spots that had internet access some which were pay. We checked into our separate transit hotel rooms for a few hours but I don't think I got more than 30 minutes of sleep. The Soekarno Hatta Airport had a very tropical-greeny feel to it. We stood in line at customs for quite a while. We watched as a frightened lady was taken out of the line and into an office. It was yet another reality check about helpless one could be in a foreign country. Once we landed in Jakarta Johanes picked us up in his SUV which to my surprise had no seat belts. His personal drive was about as crazy as the cabbies in New York. Johanes told us that you can have a personal driver in Jakarta for about $50 USD/mo. Along the way from the airport to our hotel we passed several "fish farms" and throngs of street merchants. The skyline was very impressive to me considering this was a third world country. It definitely put Sacramento's to shame. Johanes told us that about 9 million people live inside of Jakarta but up to 15 million people work within the city limits during the day. Considering again that we were in a 3rd world country, our hotel was nice and pretty clean. We unpacked and then got straight to business. We drive downtown took quite a while. Traffic in Jakarta seemed pretty chaotic. The concept of a traffic lane exists in theory but in practice it didn't seem to matter. We pulled up to a very nice building that was convered in granite. The office was on the 6th floor and had beautiful glass doors. It was obvious from the beginning that they had lots of questions for us. We were offered some coffee (which turned out to be a mocha) and we dove straight into our first meeting. The first night our hosts took us to what appeared to be an authentic Indonesian restaurant. It was set completely outside and a small lake-like body of water. Our meal was * White fish * Lemon chicken * Rice * A spicy spinich * Brocolli with garlic * Calamari with a chili sauce |
