Driving to Utah
|
| Today my brother Joel, sister Britt and I drove to Kanab, Utah, about 8 hours or so from home, to hike the Buckskin Gulch. It was a supposed to be a 20 mile hike with a little overnight stay at a confluence where two canyons met, then a 7 mile hike out to our car. It did not turn out this way... Today we drove through Las Vegas, St. George, Zion National Park and loads of arid land to get to our campsite. It's hot. Very hot. It's a concern for us since we'll be hiking in it and the fact that there are no water sources in the canyon. Tonight we slept at a campsite that was in the quietest place I've ever been. I actually heard a fly coming from 20 feet away, zoom past me, then heard it fly away. In fact you'll see in one of these photos the distance we could talk at normal levels and still hear each other perfectly. The sun went down and we played harmonicas, but there were neighboring campers so we stopped early. When we shined our lights on the table where we had eaten it was crawling with desert life. Kangaroo rats, other kinds of rodents, even a salamander or some sort of big lizard. We need sleep quick to rest for the adventure that lies ahead. |
