randal: The object itself can be something that we can touch and look at, but it is far more likely to be a particular line of thought that power is invested in by repeated meditation on it. For the Christian, the cross is nothing without the thought of what it stands for, but with meditation it becomes a powerful symbol of what is behind it. Same with Idols, they are nothing without the thought behind them. Maybe that is why 2Cor10:5 reads as it does.

randal: Therefore, if you take an object of the kingdoms of this world and use it to promote the purposes of the Kingdom of heaven, it is made clean. But you could take the same object and use it to further the purposes of the kingdom of this world and it is unclean. Hence, the common psychological explanation of a 'numinous' object. The theory says that we add to an object the power that it carries.
